National Quilt Day 2025

Havasu Stitchers is a local quilt guild here in our beautiful lakeside city with many talented members.  Come by and learn about quilting from our local quilters.

We are excited to include a demo area for kids to learn to sew as well as demos on cutting and piecing fabric, ironing, painting fabric, hand quilting, making yo-yos, and a demo on the Underground Railroad quilt block patterns.

We will have a raffle quilt, shown below, for Denise's Day, a local organization fighting against cancer. It is a queen-sized quilt donated by Sherri Ashford.  All raffle proceeds will go to the Denise's Day group.  All money raised by Denise's Day goes directly to local families battling cancer.  Tickets available at the event, 1 ticket for $1 and 6 tickets for $5.  You do not need to be present to win!

A quilt usually has three layers -- a pieced top, a middle layer of batting, and a backing.  Here in Arizona, a quilt may only have the two outer layers.  Once the layers are "sandwiched" together, the quilt can be tied, hand stitched, or machine stitched with thread to create the patterns that hold the layers together. It can take years to acquire the skills for some of the more intricate designs. In recent years, it has become the practice to label quilts with the quiltmaker's name, pattern name, year made, and other information specific to that quilt.

What is National Quilt Day, you ask?  It is a day to recognize quiltmakers and their artistry and abilities.  The name comes from the Latin word "culcita," meaning "stuffed sack."  The practice of quilting dates back as far as 3400 B.C.  During America's early years, the quilt was utilitarian, sometimes created from scraps and old clothes to provide warmth on beds or hangings in doorways and windows to keep the cold out.  National Quilting Day started in 1991 and is celebrated in March every year.  Many quilters will hang a quilt outside on this day for all to enjoy.

Once again, we have lots lined up for everyone to come see and enjoy a fun day of quilt making.

Havasu Stitcher’s Community Outreach program will be making various sewn items to help support our local Charity Organizations.

We will have our annual Indoor Garage Sale fundraiser. Come check out all the great fabric and sewing items for sale.

We will have a Vendor Mall for your shopping pleasure with:

Havasu Quilts, Fabrics Unlimited, Donna's Quilt Shop, Roxy's Quilt & Sew, Grandma Jo's Quilt Shop

There will be quilts of various sizes on display for all to enjoy.

There will be demos on different aspects of quilt making.

We are once again having an open Sit-N-Sew with Havasu Stitchers working on their own projects.  Feel free to ask questions of our members.

A food truck will be available for your dining pleasure.

Members!  We need about 25 medium-sized quilts for display.  They should be 60" x 60" or less in size.

Quilt registration forms can be found HERE.

If you are not a Havasu Stitcher but would like to come, demo, and/or show off your quilt talents, please contact us at info@havasustitchers.com for more information.
